2004 PARK BOND PROPOSAL
PIMMIT RUN STREAM VALLEY TRAIL
Comments by Fairfax Trails and Streams
February 3, 2004
Fairfax Trails and Streams (FTAS) has been working
to develop this trail since 1991. We collectively devote about a
thousand volunteer hours per year toward completing this project.
This includes discussions with landowners, park staff personnel,
public officials; litter cleanups, sponsoring public hikes, supervising
Eagle Scout projects, research of land records, and many other tasks.
The Cross County Trail is scheduled for completion
in 2005. FTAS conceived of this project and strongly supports its
completion. After 2005, we feel that other stream valley trails
should be moved up in priority, notably the Pimmit Run Trail. Enough
money should be in the bond to support completion of the trail.
The most costly feature is stream crossings, which
cannot fully be done with volunteers. But volunteers stand ready
to help install these crossings. Each will take about 100 hours
which represents FTAS matching contribution. Some we recommend
use boulders as stepping stones; others ET Techtonics type bridges,
which can be hauled to the site and built by volunteers.
CROSSINGS (Upstream to Downstream):
-
Olney Park: Boulders
-
Old Idylwood Rd: ET Techtonics Bridge, 40'
-
At Little League- Boulders
-
Below Old Chesterbrook - ETT Bridge 40'
-
4th crossing below Old Dominion (3 already funded) - Boulders
-
Bryan Branch- ETT Bridge 40'
-
Potomac School upper crossing- Boulders
-
Potomac School lower crossing- ETT Bridge 50'
-
Little Pimmit replace fw crossing - Boulders
The boulder crossings are about $15,000; the ET Techtonics bridges
are about $30,000. Thus the above crossings come to 5 X $15,000
+ 4 * $30,000 = $195,000. Other costs include Land Acquisition (floodplain),
signage, road crossings, tributary crossings, surveying etc, we
would estimate $75,000.
Hence, we request a total of $270,000 for the
Pimmit Run Trail.
Fairfax Trails and Streams also strongly supports
funding for Clarks Run Bridge in Riverbend Park, an integral part
of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.
