Wanderbirds Plan to Explore Along Pimmit Run to Source
Hiker's Route to Lie Through Woodlands and Meadows
by Robert Shosteck
This Sunday the Wanderbirds will go on an exploring trip along Pimmit
Run, starting from a point 1 mile from Chain Bridge, and ending near
the source of the stream in the vicinity of Idylwood, Va. This hike
offers a variety of late autumn scenery, and we pass through meadows,
woodlands and rolling pastures.
Readers and club members who wish to go on this 7-mile hike will meet
in front of The Post Building at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, and board buses
for the starting point of the hike. Phone in reservations at National
4200 by Saturday night. The round trip fare will be 50 cents. Bring
lunch and a cup for coffee, and leave the silks and high heels at home.
As shown by the map, the route follows a dirt road a short way downhill
to Pimmit Run, which we follow for nearly 2 miles to the first spring.
This portion of the route traverses woods and meadows, and the open
trail follows closely the bank of the run. Hikers should be on the lookout
for hazelnuts and hickory nuts, both of which are now ripe and falling.
Leaving the spring, the hikers will make a slight detour over a hill
to Viresco, a station on the abandoned Great Falls electric line. Pimmit
Run in this vicinity becomes rather rocky and reminds on of the streams
near Great Falls. Club cameramen will have an opportunity to take some
fine panoramic shots from the hill which we climb just before reaching
Great Falls road.
From this point on we follow old woods roads and pasture trails until
we reach Idylwood, where the buses will be waiting for use near the
railway station. Hike schedules for November and December and copies
of the Potomac Trails book will be available on Sunday morning when
you buy your bus tickets.
